rac-BINAP(O)

Formula:                                   (C6H5)2PC10H6C10H6P(O)(C6H5)2 = C44H32OP2

Molecular Weight:                    638.7

CAS Registry Number: [204862-91-9]

CA Index Name:                      Phosphine oxide, [2’-(diphenylphosphino)[1,1’-binaphthalen]-2-yl]diphenyl-

Other Names:                           2,2’-Bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1’-binaphthyl mono-oxide

                                                2,2’-Bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1’-binaphthyl monooxide

                                                2,2’-Bis(diphenylphosphino)-1,1’-binaphthyl monoxide

                                                2-(Diphenylphosphino)-2’-(diphenylphosphinyl)-1,1’- binaphthyl

Abbreviated Names:                 BINAP(O); rac-BINAP(O); BINPO; BINAP monoxide

Air- and moisture-stable white crystalline solid.

Uses: Ligand for asymmetric catalysis with chiral poisoning and building block for synthesis.

The chiral poisoning strategy has been employed for Diels-Alder reactions, catalyzed by a Ru Lewis acid derived from racemic BINAP(O).  Excellent diastereoselectivity and  ee of up to 60% were obtained with L-proline and L-prolinamide as chiral poisons: Organometallics 2002, 21, 1662.
